Cigarette Cards were first made in the United States in 1875, by Allen & Ginter. They were used to stiffen cigarette packaging to protect the contents. While the cards’ purpose was functional, it soon became obvious that these small bits of cardboard were great marketing tools. The first cards depicted actresses, nature, flags, and of course Sport. Boxing and American Baseball were the most popular. The U.K. quickly followed and started inserting cards in W.D. & H.O. Wills cigarette packages in the late 1880s. Both children and adults began to collect cards featuring their favorite heroes and subjects, hoping to complete full sets based on theme. The cards were phased out during WWI, in order to save paper, but reappeared in the 1920’s. During WWII, they were again discontinued for the same reason, and this time they did not return.
